Advantages Of Homeschooling - I'm in Favor!

by Judy DeSantis
(Canton, NY, USA)

I, for one, am truly in favor of homeschooling. The school system has been a difficult road for my oldest child - he is expected to conform. He had asked to be homeschooled. And I'm not touching the tip of the iceberg. I also like homeschooling because you can interject your own curriculum. I've always thought a volunteering/philanthropy aspect in a curriculum would be imperative.

Working in the educational field, I find that the best, most liked teachers (by parents and kids) are the ones who teach outside the box. Instead of a dull science lesson, they put together ingredients and ask the children to guess what the outcome will be (it's even more enjoyable when it becomes yummy ice cream!). It doesn't mean that the teachers are "softies-" but they are the ones who know that children are inherent learners. Rote teaching isn't their "de rigeur." Homeschooling offers that advantage if parents want to take it.

Do I wish I had been able to homeschool my son? You bet. In lieu of that, I am a strong homeschooling advocate, and often find that the homeschooled children are already the most social.

Homeschooling choices
by: Annie D

Hi Judy,

Thanks heaps for sharing your thoughts with my readers. Making a decision to homeschool is not simple, it does require a lot of commitment from the parents. I too, would have liked to homeschool my children, or at least my daughter -particularly in her early primary years. But for various reasons it just wasn't practical in my case.

I think the thing to trust no matter what a parent or family decides, is either way your kids, with your support, will find their way through and will learn heaps on the way, sometimes in spite of school!

Our job as parents is not always to make it easier, but often to help them gain the skills to cope in situations that are not ideal.

Wishing you JOY,
Annie D

PS Judy found me on facebook, looking for other Desantis' - we both married a Desantis but as far as we know we are not related!
