Bill's Parenting Tips: The No Response Response

by Bill
(Lakewood Ranch, FL)

  • 1. When a child whines about something, do not respond for a while. After a reasonable tolerance period (yours not the child's), say, "I don't understand whine."

  • 2. When a child drops to the floor to stomp and scream, stand above him/her and cheer/applaud.

  • 3. When a child drops to the floor to stomp and scream, stand above him/her and starting pointing and laughing at him/her.

  • 4. Do not forget to have a handy "I dressed myself today." button for your child.

  • 5. Remember that sports are up to the child not you.

  • 6. Advise on but do not "do" their homework.

  • 7. Better to lose a school crafts competition than have the entry actually made by the parent(s).

  • 8. Know the difference between spanking and child beating. A proper spank is an excellent attention getter.

  • 9. Threats that are not applied do not work.

  • 10. Discipline should occur "Now" not when someone else arrives/gets home.

Thanks for your top 10 Parenting Tips Bill - I liked your way of dealing with whining - if kids learn they don't get the desired response then they have to learn a new way of asking for the attention they need.

I would just suggest to our readers to be careful not to ridicule when the child is throwing a tantrum though. Turning it into something funny can interrupt the drama and shift it quickly if it is done with light-hearted humor, but I would not want a child to feel humiliated. Kids throw tantrums out of frustration and because their needs are not being met. Of course we don't want them to get trained into thinking this is going to work to get me attention, so interrupting with humor or ignoring the behavior is a good way to prevent that. Of course what we want is for the child to learn to get what they need with more positive interactions. So as parents we need to respond positively when they do ask nicely.

I also SOOOO agree with your number 7 - about parents making the child's craft or science project. I can remember as a child feeling devastated when a child who I knew her Mother had made her entries - always won everything! I could never understand how the teachers could not see it! I know my husband - who is a teacher has ways of dealing with projects that are clearly parent's. He sends a certificate home for the parent!

Good luck with your entry!
Annie D :)

Click N Kids would have to be one of my subscribers most popular programs, and from what they say, it is mostly because the kids have fun while they are learning. In fact they don't even realize they are learning! Click N kids are using the Looney Tune Characters now in their phonics program, which of course kids just love.
