"doing" math

by Connie
(Alaska)

Is there some way I can make Saxon math lessons more interesting? Games online? We are pretty relaxed in our education philosophy, used to Unschool, but she expressed an interest in formal learning. She does her other two "R's" fine, just bored of math, can you imagine that ? LOL!

Some of it I can say, okay let's go and build something and she will learn that way, but some, I have never used in my entire life! She most likely won't either. Do I just skip this, it's not like she's going to recall any of the "useless" stuff later, and if she needs it, she'll learn it then, like prerequisites in college, some of that is learning stuff all over again you forgot from high school. But I'd like her to be able to follow along as each lesson ties into one another.

To Do Or Not To Do!
by: Annie Desantis

Hi Connie,

I only have a very general overview of the Saxon Curriculum, so it is a bit hard to give you any specific ideas. Hopefully some of my readers will be able to add comments to this topic.

But in general with homeschooling, I would suggest, go with the energy of the child. If your daughter is wanting to pursue more formal learning, then even if you can't see an application for it, go with her interest. Much of education should really be about learning to think, learning to explore, learning to question. It doesn't necessarily need to be a practical application.

So if your daughter is asking to explore the set curriculum with maths, then run with it and see what she takes from it. You may be able to apply some of the lessons to things she is interested in, or use examples from her world.

As you say, she may need to progress through the lessons in order to build on the previous lesson. Some Math needs to be taught in a building block style to master the bigger skill.

Do Saxon have a forum where you can discuss ideas with other parents? Are there other parents in your area who are homeschooling?

Hopefully you will get a bit more input,

All the best
Annie D
