Infertile At Five!
by Diane
When my oldest was in school--I think it was 4th grade, all of the girls in her class were taken to a room where the school nurse showed them a film about getting their period. I STILL remember the day I had to sit through that ordeal!!! Anyway, my husband was out of town that particular day so since I was home alone with all three of my girls I decided that evening that we would all talk about "that time" in a girl's life. I wanted them to know that it was a perfectly normal thing and that each girl will go through it and I wanted them to be aware of the fact that it's okay to talk about it with me if they need to. They each listened and I thought I had done a fairly decent job of preparing them for what would happen one day, and at the end of our discussion I asked them if they had any questions about it. My youngest, Tracey, being the stubborn little kid that she sometimes still is, looked at me, and before walking away she said with her hands on her hips "I am NEVER going to do that". And she sounded as if she really meant it!! I just decided that maybe at 5 she was a bit too young to understand it all, yet I wanted her to hear this kind of stuff from me and not someone else who could confuse her more. She never said anything more about it so I didn't either, until a few days later. She came into the kitchen with tears in her eyes and I could see that she had fallen and scraped her knee. After a few kisses and hugs I told her that she would be fine, but with her sad little face she looked up at me still full of tears and she blurted out "I am never gonna have babies!". Trying to not look too surprised I sat on the floor with her and started to question why. I told her that I knew how much she loved playing with her baby dolls and that I know she loves her new little cousin, so I didn't understand why she never wanted to have any babies. Still, with tears in her eyes, she looked at me as serious as she'd ever been in her life and said "I DO want to have babies but now I can't!" Talk about trying to keep a straight face as well as soothe my child, I simply asked "why?" She looked at me and said, "because I fall down all the time so all my eggs are broke!" At that moment I didn't know whether to laugh or cry so I just hugged her!!! I honestly don't even remember what I told her after that - all I know is that it was one moment in her life that I will never ever forget!
