editors note: Duplo is a great construction toy for little fingers, until they are able to manage the much smaller pieces of ordinary Lego. Learning hand eye coordination, and manipulation skills, Duplo is definitely one of my highly recommended educational toys.

I would recommend starting with a basic set of Duplo blocks, and then adding people and animals as preschoolers love role playing and the little people are just perfect for that.

There are lots of sets, such as zoo, farm, occupations like firemen or policemen, and even Thomas the Tank Engine Duplo sets. This farm set is particularly popular with little kids:

LEGO Star Wars The Battle of Endor (8038)

My kids build for hours, it helps with fine motor skills, sorting, counting, shapes, and really gives their imaginations a work out!!

Star Wars themed Lego is the most popular Lego this year. However I would firstly recommend you get a range of basic Lego before buying specific themed Lego. That way your kids can build far more than the kit-set Lego constructions, and can use the specialty pieces to enhance their own imagination.

Lego definitely seems to be one of those timeless educational toys, that kids of all ages play with - including teenagers.
