Melissa & Doug 60-Piece Standard Unit Blocks

I really like the standard Melissa and Doug Building Blocks. We got one of the big sets of 60 pieces and the kids love it.

I feel it is important that kids use their own imagination when using construction toys, and although I do like Lego, I feel it has been very commercialized. It seems with every movie, we now see a range of Lego packs to brainwash kids into building set constructions. I know there is a lot more scope with Lego, but certainly with younger children, I feel the Melissa and Doug building blocks give them a far greater opportunity to use their own imagination when constructing, rather than following a diagram. (I know there is value in learning that too!)

Our two children, 5 and 8 often pull out the blocks and have come up with some amazing buildings, or use the blocks to mark out roads or farms. They add lots of other toys into their play, which I don't see them do so much with Lego. We do also have some of the other Melissa and Doug wooden toys, and I really like that they are natural, non toxic, non commercial. Kids these days are inundated with conditioning to be a consumer (or to convince us parents they have to have the latest and best toy!)

I much prefer toys that can stand the test of time, and can be used in a variety of ways.

I would recommend you consider Melissa and Doug blocks as one of the best educational toys.
