Mosaic Art - For Ages 8 And Up

While looking for an art activity among the supplies and kits on offer at the local dollar store, we came across all the equipment and supplies required for "mosaic" art:

1) Wooden boxes with hinged lids, picture frames and trays which were stained a pretty shade of brown and were suitable for gluing the "mosaic" tiles.

2) River stones, shells and brightly colored wooden beads to use instead of mosaic tiles - and even bags of kid-friendly color-coordinated clay mosaic tiles.

3) Most important of all, we came across a locally-made all-purpose glue which we knew and trusted to work well.

Back at home, we poured about a quarter of a cup of the glue into small disposable bowls and used toothpicks or small paint brushes to apply the glue to the stones and shells and beads and tiles or to our frames and trays and boxes - some of us in an orderly fashion with little dabs of glue and some of us with wild abandon and great amounts of glue.

Because my children were very young and impatient, I suggested that they decorate only the tops of the boxes and the bottoms of the trays (and not the sides where the "mosaic" tiles would slide out of place before the glue set).

Everyone's "mosaic" art turned out gorgeous.
