No Perfect Tips On Parenting

There is no 'perfect' parent and so no 'perfect tips on parenting either! Each one may work in one situation, but it may backfire in another situation. Nonetheless, following are my best or most oft used parenting tips while I raise my adorable two kids.

1. Remember, you are first a human being and then a parent. You too have your ups and downs, moods and energy level which may vary. If you can keep this in mind, you will be more understanding towards self and thus your children.

2. Every child is an individual by him/herself. Do not impose your ideas, opinions, or attitude on to the child. Let them flourish.

3. Be honest with them. ALWAYS.

4. Be a good role model. Don't do things which you don't want your children to do.

5. LISTEN. LISTEN. LISTEN. This cannot be compromised upon. How will you know or understand your children if you don't listen to their stories, experiences, feelings, fears.....

6. NO put-them-down comments! No sarcasm at any cost!

7. Instill a healthy level of self-confidence - no underestimating and no over confidence! BELIEVE in them!

8. Treat their feelings gently - 'Handle with care'.

9. Always, Always encourage them. Explore their strengths by giving exposure to different hobbies and sports.

10. Hug and kisses are for free as they demonstrate your unconditional love and acceptance!

Hi Anjali,

Thank you for your wonderful collection of 10 Parenting Tips. A wise Mom indeed. I particularly loved your listening tip - I think parents underestimate the power and importance of this parenting tip. Many problems for children can be solved simply by Mom or Dad listening and giving them a chance to say how they feel and explore the issue. Kids don't often need us to jump in and fix anything - they can learn to trust themselves if we give them the space to explore it, and give them our loving attention.
