Rhonda Byrne and The Secret

An Introduction to the Law of Attraction

There is no doubt about it, Rhonda Byrne's The Secret is a great introduction to the Law of Attraction. And I reckon she models law of attraction in action, but not necessarily in a way you would expect! I'll show you how I see her vibrational alignment with what she teaches versus what her underlying beliefs are creating. I'll also highlight what I believe is the key factor missing in The Secret DVD.

The Secret presents: The Law of Attraction

Rhonda Byrne's DVD and book The Secret, has popularized the ideas about the Law of Attraction, put simply in the movie as Ask, Believe, Receive. The viral spread of The Secret has presented the ideas of law attraction to thousands of people, seeking to understand what life is all about.

The Secret was a good introduction, but really is just scraping the surface of what the Law of Attraction is all about. The Law of Attraction is nothing new, I remember my grandmother quoting from the Jewish Book of Proverbs, (chapter 23, verse 7) "As man thinketh in his heart, so he is". Buddha (560 years BC) taught we are what we think. Plato (3,000 years BC) taught about Universal Laws. Einstein believed in the power of imagination. So the idea of reality creation based on our thoughts has been around for a long time. (There really isn't any secret!)

Teachings of Abraham-Hicks

The original version of The Secret movie was based on the teachings of Abraham. In 1985, Jerry and Esther Hicks began a series of conversations with Abraham, a name chosen by a group of non-physical teachers. Esther delivers/channels the teachings of Abraham, in my opinion, Law Attraction at it's clearest.

Rhonda Byrne's vision

In presenting The Secret, Rhonda Byrne not only presented a great DVD and book, introducing law attraction, but she also demonstrated Law of Attraction in Action. The viral marketing and phenomenal success of The secret wouldn't have been as successful had she not had a clear vision of what she wanted. Her vision is to empower others to live a life of joy, and The Secret was her vehicle to spread her message.

Rhonda Byrne's Unconscious Beliefs

However, Rhonda Byrne it appears to me has not kept herself in alignment with her vision. She has created huge lawsuits from people she worked with on The Secret movie, which seems to me to speak volumes about what she is attracting vibrationally. I suspect Rhonda has beliefs about deserving success, or issues about relationships that she has not cleared up (as we all do!). Law of attraction delivers what you think, and 90% of what we think is driven from our chronic beliefs.

Changing your conscious thoughts is a fabulous start, but it is the chronic thoughts that contribute far more to reality creation. Uncomfortably for Rhonda Byrne, being in the public eye has put her in the spotlight as an example!

There are many studies of people who have won lotteries, and after a period of only one year, the majority are back where they were, or in many cases worse off. This indicates that people are not in alignment with their changed circumstances, vision or dream, so law of attraction simply re-creates the reality one believes in.

Key Factors Missing From The Secret

Key One: Clean Up Your Stuff!

The first key factor that I believe Rhonda Byrne's The Secret doesn't cover, is clearing up your stuff! I consider this underpins the three tenets of The Secret, Ask, Believe, and Receive. You are asking all the time, but most of us are asking unconsciously.

Think about it, when you grumble about your kids; "he never puts his dirty clothes in the basket",
or, "she's always rude to me when her friends are around". You are wishing your son would put his clothes in the wash basket, or you daughter would treat you respectfully. But what you are constantly putting out is he never .... she doesn't respect me .... no-one listens to me.... etc. So instead of nagging your child, maybe check out what you are chronically thinking about their behaviour and about the way people treat you.

Key Two: Our Emotions

The second important concept missing from the secret, is the importance of paying attention to our emotions. Abraham talks about our emotions being the indicator for where our alignment is. If we are saying we want to be a relax parent but we are feeling uptight and worried then we are going to be creating an anxious environment for our child. By becoming aware of our feelings, we can then make a different choice about how we think. Cleaning up our stuff is clearing those chronic beliefs that we reinforce by how we feel and the decisions we make about a situation. By honouring our feelings as our guidance system we then have an inbuilt alarm system that lets us know if we are moving in direction of our dreams - or not!

The second aspect of our emotions that is fundamentally important, is to empower and infuse our intent with feeling as if it was already a reality. I talked about this when in one of my affirmation pages - how to add power to our affirmations to make them work effectively.

Key Three: How can I Contribute to Well-Being?

The third key factor missing in Rhonda Byrne's The Secret, is contributing to the well-being of others. There was a major emphasis on manifesting stuff in The Secret. Now there is nothing wrong with fast cars and there is an excellent (and funny!) vision building example in The Secret of a guy who wanted a car. Abundance flows where energy flows, and I believe that interpreting abundance as money and cars is a very limited view of abundance. We all deserve wealth and financial prosperity and teaching our children to have a healthy intent with money is a really good idea.

However, I also think that if we can focus more on how can I contribute to increasing the good in a situation, we automatically align ourselves with a higher energy. With our children, helping them to understand giving joyfully is the same vibration as receiving. If we put out positive energy in our community we attract that back. Helping them to choose the best outcome in any situation, how to be happy instead of right! (And that is a really good lesson for Mom and Dad!)

Having pointed out what I think The Secret DVD has glossed over, I do believe The Secret is a really useful and positive tool. It is a great way to introduce the ideas of Law of Attraction to your family and friends. Watching the movie, or reading The Secret book, is a really good way to bring about a discussion. Kids don't have as many chronic beliefs as we adults do! So if they start practicing conscious thinking, and reality creation, then they are going to find it far easier to get lined up vibrationally with their dreams.
