The Development of Children

This child development book has been my bible. I think there have been 6 editions, and I have had my current copy for about 4 years and have raised 5 children. I had an earlier edition for my first three children, and because there is a gap of 6 years between my third and four child, I decided to get an updated copy.

I had trained as a teacher, and assumed I knew about human development. But it all went out the window when I had my first baby. I bought lots of other books over the years, but this is the one I keep coming back to.

I think it is actually a text book and it is expensive although you can often get a second hand copy of the older editions.

It is not a dry text book, it's really easy to read, and aimed at parents as much as students. I actually found the discussion topics really interesting, and my husband & I often talked about them.

I wanted a book that had indepth information as to what to expect at different stages. Other child development books I got, really only covered things in a broad sense - and I wanted more detail to be able to understand what to expect at different stages of development, and also how best to parent for each stage.

It is very comprehensive, covering current research but also answering questions parents ask such as issues about babies sleeping.

This book followed me round the house, I constantly referred to it, and found it so helpful. It also resolved arguments between my husband & I about what was appropriate discipline at different ages!

If you want a birth to teenager indepth parenting manual, this would have to be it. Well worth the investment.

Child Development Text
by: Annie Desantis

Thanks Joanna,

Great review - I had a Child Development text book also, (can't remember the name though!) from my University Days. I remember at the time finding it really interesting, but I think once you have your own children, then of course it stops being theory, and you can start to observe the tiny developmental stages. Fascinating!

I know from my work as a parent coach, many conflicts between parents and children, are often because parents simply don't understand what to expect developmentally of a child.

I love that you used your book to settle disagreements with your husband! A great idea - keeps it neutral!

Click N Kids would have to be one of my subscribers most popular programs, and from what they say, it is mostly because the kids have fun while they are learning. In fact they don't even realize they are learning! Click N kids are using the Looney Tune Characters now in their phonics program, which of course kids just love.
