Toddler Walking With A Splayed Out Left Leg

by Nanny Barb

My Grandson aged 19 months only been walking for one month or so but we have noticed that his left leg splays out when he walks.

Is this something to be concerned about or not?

He wears correctly fitting shoes.

Annie's Reply

I think in this case if you have concerns it would pay to check with a pediatrician.

Young children's bones are very soft and they do stagger around and walk oddly when they start to walk. Usually as they get more confidence and practice, any weird movements tend to diminish as the muscles strengthen.

He may well have one leg with stronger muscles - sometimes children who "push and crawl" have a very dominant leg, so when beginning to walk it kind of skews their stance until the other leg strengthens.

However if he has any kind of hip displacement, then more than likely it is better to get it attended to fairly early, before the body and muscles develop "memories" that make it harder to re-train.

Just something to note - shoes are not always the best thing for children learning to walk. If possible let him go barefoot a lot of the time at home as that helps him to develop a better awareness of his foot in relation to the ground.

Walking is not just about his body learning movements, his brain has to build tiny pathways to reinforce the physical skill. So physical mastery is as much about our brains, as it is about the rest of the body.

Good luck,
Annie D :)

Click N Kids would have to be one of my subscribers most popular programs, and from what they say, it is mostly because the kids have fun while they are learning. In fact they don't even realize they are learning! Click N kids are using the Looney Tune Characters now in their phonics program, which of course kids just love.
