Unschooling legal in NZ?

Hi there!

Is unschooling legal in New Zealand?

I'd be very happy to get this question answered as I have not found any clear information on this on the internet.

Thank you very very much in advance!

Cheers,

Christine

New Zealand Unschooling

Hi Christine,

I have moved your question to the homeschooling forum in the hopes that we might get some feedback from someone in New Zealand.

In NZ between the ages of 6 to 16 you can apply for an exemption to home-school, and you are supposed to teach the equivalent curriculum. You are eligible for a grant to help with expenses.

As far as I know Unschooling is not officially accepted in New Zealand as an education alternative but I know there are ways around it.

Now with a bit of creativity you can Unschool using the homeschooling curriculum and creatively fit the activities you do into it! Keeping good records/diary and examples of kids work for evidence. It gets harder as the kids get older, and I am not sure about the requirements for sitting exams, I know there have been a lot of policy changes in NZ over the last few years.

There is a yahoo group of Unschoolers in Auckland, and I suspect they will have contacts for people elsewhere. You have to become a member to read the posts and join discussions.

A really good website about alternative education in New Zealand, and lots of links is:

LeapingFromTheBox.com

Many parents start with homeschooling/Unschooling and then move to more mainstream education as kids get older. Many children request that.

Another alternative is Steiner School, a much more creative way for children to learn. Many of the Steiner Schools in New Zealand go right through high school.

Certainly for preschool education, the New Zealand Playcentre Association uses pretty much the Unschooling Model, coupled with great parent education.

Hopefully we will get some other comments from New Zealand Homeschoolers!

You can read more about unschooling on our site if you haven't already.

Good luck

Unschooling in NZ

Unschooling is legal in NZ, and there are no requirements re exams/assessments. Because unschooling more than meets ministry requirements, I've had no trouble obtaining permission from them. I've simply and clearly shown them what we are doing and how etc.

If you want more idea of how unschooling works (in my family), I've just started a blog about it:

That is - if you folks don't get an exclusion authentication from the NZ government you will be named truant, and they will be in a bad position with the police. assignment help . To get that exception endorsement for a 14 or 15 year old is very troublesome and it requires *your parents* to assemble a point by point educational modules which generally compares to what the administration would anticipate from a school - for a 14 or 15 year old.

Click N Kids would have to be one of my subscribers most popular programs, and from what they say, it is mostly because the kids have fun while they are learning. In fact they don't even realize they are learning! Click N kids are using the Looney Tune Characters now in their phonics program, which of course kids just love.
