This book was truly inspiring to me. A boy, the new kid, just wanting to find friends winds up with so much more than he ever expected.

This is a story of love, hate, caring, and bravery. Barney shows us that we don't have to be afraid all the time, standing up to somebody who makes you feel bad isn't always as scary as it seems.

I think Barney sends a message to young people in his situation. For bullying happens so much now this book could be a blast of hope and inspiration for those going through the same things. Being the new kid is only hard for a couple of days until you find friends, but being bullied is hard until you stand up to the bully.

Until you do what Barney did. Barney stood up and at the very end he expressed how it felt to stand up to a person that is always that mean to you.

Barney's situation however (I feel) is not as severe as most peoples when it comes to bullying, but it is still bullying and it still matters. This would be a fabulous book for your child to read so they to can regain strength, hope, confidence, and be inspired by the fact that there are people like them that are going through the same things.

Read this book, Read this piece of hope.

Hi Courtney,

Great review, it is just such a shame that this book is no longer available. Carol Carrick has been such a prolific author of children's books, and most of them were illustrated by her late husband. I believe her son now illustrates for her.

From what I remember, What a Wimp was at one time developed into a program for schools. Perhaps if enough people wrote to her publisher, they would reprint it!
