Melissa and Doug Building Blocks

Back To Nature:
Wooden Educational Toys

I really like the standard Melissa & Doug Building Blocks. We got one of the big sets of 60 pieces and the kids love it.

I feel it is important that kids use their own imagination when using construction toys, and although I do like Lego, I feel it has been very commercialized. It seems with every movie, we now see a range of Lego packs to brainwash kids into building set constructions. I know there is a lot more scope with Lego, but certainly with younger children, I feel the Melissa and Doug building blocks give them a far greater opportunity to use their own imagination when constructing, rather than following a diagram. (I know there is value in learning that too!)

Our two children, 5 and 8 often pull out the blocks and have come up with some amazing buildings, or use the blocks to mark out roads or farms. They add lots of other toys into their play, which I don't see them do so much with Lego. We do also have some of the other Melissa and Doug wooden toys, and I really like that they are natural, non toxic, non commercial. Kids these days are inundated with conditioning to be a consumer (or to convince us parents they have to have the latest and best toy!)

I much prefer toys that can stand the test of time, and can be used in a variety of ways.

I would recommend you consider Melissa and Doug blocks as one of the best educational toys.

The Importance Of Imaginative Play

As a licensed preschool teacher, with an MS in Education and ten years of preschool teaching experience, I believe a set of blocks is the best toy for a preschool child.

Blocks are an "open-ended" toy, meaning the child can explore using them without predetermined rules or skills. A set of blocks will advance a child's physical, cognitive, communicative, creative, and social skills.

You might argue that blocks are not "colorful" and do not offer all the "bells and whistles" advertised by current toys on the market. If that is true, why do blocks remain a staple in schools, stores and catalogs? Because blocks give the child a chance to develop his/her IMAGINATION. And.... creativity, vision and resourcefulness are still skills that are highly prized by society as time marches on.

Blocks can cultivate those skills. Invest in a good set of blocks and watch both you and your child "grow".

Click N Kids would have to be one of my subscribers most popular programs, and from what they say, it is mostly because the kids have fun while they are learning. In fact they don't even realize they are learning! Click N kids are using the Looney Tune Characters now in their phonics program, which of course kids just love.
